Nice post first off, but do u got any advice about turning off UPNP on your computer and router and still have good download speed for us people that have more than 2 computers on our network and need a router?

This will be a long post but I hope that it will spur something constructive.I hope it will be filled with some good info and am looking forward to corrections and information that may be posted in reply.
I would describe myself as being somewhere between a n00b and intermediate computer enthusiast (which means for example I would try to learn linux but very quickly run back to warm and fuzzy XP).
I have tried these 3 clients; ABC (another bit torrent), Torrent Storm both of which are both GUI's(graphic user interfaces) for cores that are written in Python which is a computer programming language.
A graphic user interface,at least according to me, is like a cute pretty program
with buttons & progress indicators which you use to control & monitor the real program which does all the actual work.
The clients written in python reallly seemed to slow down my computer so I was really happy to find a program that was written in C++ which is more effecient and didn't slow my computer down.So for example I could actually play a single player not over the internet game of Unreal Tournament while I was using Bit Comet.
Thank you very much for writing the program RnySmile.
So I hope if you read this you wont get mad but correct me on anything if I am wrong.I think it is important for people to understand what is going when it comes to UPnP support in bit comet. To help explain this I would use the metaphor(similie) that programs are like guests in your house. They can be quite helpful and pleasant if you know and trust them.
Still you would be pretty reluctant to give them the keys to your house.
I think that UPnP support in Bit Comet at least in some ways is giving the keys to your computer to Bit comet.
I think the simplest way to describe UPnP support is that it tells a Router(that supports this option) to open up a pathway without your "input" so that information can flow freelly back & forth from the internet to the computer that is behind the router. In my case I have 2 computers one hooked to a cable modem downstairs and the other one is upstairs and it hooks up to the computer downstairs.
This is a so called ICS setup or internet connection sharing.
I can actually get & send information from the internet to the computer upstairs even though it is not directly hooked to the internet.
In order to do this though I have to tell the computer downstairs which acts a "middleman" to relay the info back and forth from the internet to the computer upstairs. One computer hides behind the other just as a computer can hide behind a router and in both cases the computers that are hiding are protected. While it used to be me manually telling the computer/router downstairs to open the pathway now Bit Comet is in control of this. This is quite a powerful thing.
Many people have purchased routers or routers/hardware firewalls and some realize that these devices give them a good layer of protection and some maybe dont and should realize what is happening. Bit comet also seems to leave these ports open when it is uninstalled so uninstalling and reinstalling can leave a few ports open.Bit Comet also opened a port in my network when it was installed on the computer directly connected to the internet which is far as I know is unneccesarry.
Dont get me wrong. In lurking in this forum I have seen countless questions asking"why is my download slow does it have to do with my router etc etc" and UPnP support can only help these people but I hope they really understand it.
And UPnP support must be a Godsend for people who have dynamic IP's and who are behind a router.Last but not least I would say that the best way to keep programs with UPnP support honest would be a good software firewall which monitors outgoing traffic.
If you think I am paranoid than you can read here http://grc.com/unpnp/unpnp.htm looking forward to the discussion.
To help out people I would like to give a little feedback on my experiments with different settings and such with Bit comet.
I have a cable connection as has been discussed but I am afraid to contact my ISP and start asking questions about upload download bandwith.
Anyhow to set my upload Bandwith or the Global Max Upload Rate I just left it at no limit and waited for it to stablilize which it did at about 65 kbs which is pretty good considering that i hear alot of ISP's cap at alot less. I then multiplied the 65 kbps per second by .8 (80%) and got 52 kbs per second which was a bit too high so I reduced it by increments of 4 kbs till I got the best download rate.
After comparing some of the speeds that I was getting with ABC & Torrentstorm I was still disappointed in the speed I was getting with Bit Comet. I realize it is very hard to compare clients because there are so many variables with bittorrent, but this was matching them head to head on the same set up, on the same torrent and also just general impressions over time.
I totally fiddled with all the settings and the only thing that seemed to help(besides limiting upload speed!) was the Max number of connections per Task setting (under Advanced----->Connections) which I just set to a ridiculously high number like 1000.This seemed to bring me about to what I have reached with other clients.
I am not sure why this worked for me as I understand that having to maintain so many connections in of itself wastes alot of bandwidth.Perhaps people are only uploading at very small amounts and so It takes many connections to get decent peers to download from or maybe you need to get connected to more seeds.

I should also mention that limiting the number of upload slots to around 4 was suggested with torrent storm and I have achieved 150kbps+ speeds with that client(maybe this will help some one)
Anyways I hope some of you read at least a little of this and I hope that some will give there opinion on security and optimization of Bit Comet

Damn, nice post there, lol. Very good information![]()
Well I am not saying that you should turn off this service really,
I was just saying for the good of all that they should be cautious.I do not have router and I am certainly not an expert on the subject.
I suppose it would be convenient to have the program set itself up on the router and it would be very elegant for the program to close the port when it is done which there seems to be an option for in Bit comet,
sort of a perfect scenerio.Imagine a program that is not Bit comet that can do the exact same thing but is evil it could open any port it wants perhaps so some other evil program that was installed can listen to the instuctions of the malicious person who spread it.I think a software firewall that monitors outbound traffic may help here.
Setting up a computer that is behind another computer to use Bit Comet is not all that hard to do really. In XP professional on the computer that is DirectlY connected to internet simply goto control panel---->Network & Internet connections------>Network Connections------->
here you should see a a few icons labeled local area network, local area network 2 etc. This assumes you have already set up your own home small network and have enabled internet connections sharing(ICS).
Now find the one connection that is hooked directly to the internet it should have a little hand underneath it indicating it is being shared.Right click on it and select Properties, then ----------->Advanced(tab at the top)----->Settings(under ICS not firewall)------>now you will see a window showing all the ports that are openend on the computer.First you will need to know some information about what port to add
so run to the computer that you want to use for Bit comet(the one not hooked directly to the internet) and goto start----->run------>and type CMD in the box.
another box should open up,a scaryblack DOS box.
Type---->ipconfig. than some info should come up write down the number
associated with I.P. adress. Now install Bit Comet to that same computer and look in the preferences to see what port is listed under the listen port heading, write that number down.
Now run back to the computer that is directly connected to the internet and click add.A window should come up and here you can type a description of the service so type Bitcomet upstairs(or whatever you want to label it).Under name or I.P. address type exactly the IP address that you wrote down. Then type in the port that you wrote down under both internal and external port number for this service.Leave TCP selected.
And now you have opened a pathway for that specific program so that one computer can communicate out to the internet thru the computer directly connected to the internet.
Software firewalls can signifigantly complicate things and I had to turn mine off after I took the precaution of unhooking the computer directly hooked to the internet from the internet.Zone alarm the retail version has a wizard that helps you use ICS.See Screenshots below for help.
If you would like to disable the UpNp support then you will have to find your way to (under xp prof) Administrative tools------>open up Services in the list find SSDP Discovery Service stop the service then Disable it.
Then find Universal Plug and Play Device Host in the list (this service isnt for joysticks and such but for network stuff) stop it then disable it.You should notice in your Bit comet log that UPNP will not be able to map ports anymore. Some times patching windows especially to like sp1 sp2 will reenable these services so you may have to turn them off again if that is what you want.
I have also included a screenshot of Torrent Storm working away the speed is comparable with the what I was getting with Bit comet last night although I did see Torrent storm peak up to 147 kbps per second but damn after running for awhile my comp moves like molasses.

Oh ya did any of the things that I suggested help with increasing the speed of bit comet for your guys I forgot to ask in the last post.
And if you think you have got your router or ICS connection configured properly than you can test it here http://btfaq.com/natcheck.pl
if you pass there may be another reason besides your router or network configuration that is slowing you down.![]()
Thanks for the information!
I've read so much information today and tried so many things. People kept saying things like postforwarding ports and blablabla.
I had already installed a new firewall, sygate (first I had ZoneAlarm).
And then I thought it was my router. I'm just a girl who doesn't know a lot of computers. But now for 2 days I'm trying different things cause I would like to download things. And know I finally think YEAH ..
First I installed Bittorent, then Azureus and then Bitcomet. And know I've got something working. My speed was around 30-38 KB/s first and know it goes from 80 to 105 KB/s.
When I looked at your printscreen I saw your download speed was higher then your upload speed and it was the other way around with me. So at the global settings (connection) I set unlimiting global maximum upload speed to 30 KB/s. And then my KB/s Dn went from 38 to 78. After that I also changed the settings you described and I'm satisfied. Okay we humans always like it better, but for now it's a big improvement.
Oh and that test.. BRILLIANT!!
I was asking myself if my speed problems were caused by the settings of my router. But the point is I don't even know if I have a router and I said it already, I don't know anything about computers and downloading and programs. So because of people like yourself, people who write things down on the internet I can search for information and read it and hopefully I understand it.
I got Internet through a housemate so I wanted to ask him already if he could change the settings of the router. But he should not know that I'm downloading cause he doesn't like it because it's illegal blablabla.. But because of that test I got my answer and I PASSED!
I wanted to let you know that I'm grateful for the information.
For now I know it hasn't any thing to do with my router and I will look if I can improve my speed by changing some more settings.
It's what you did, trying/ comparing, to look if by changing something there's improvement.

lve tried some off the things in this thread and they have helped my download go from 5kbs to up to 45kbs
but as with everything there is no clear cut setting to apply to every person using bitcomet.
lm still modifying settings to tweak the rate but at the end of the day you have to accept a happy medium.
l set out trying configure bc because l used bittornado before and reached a download rate of 119kbs , on some dls, and wanted to achieve this with bc.
but, l have to admit, its up to the user what they want with want they got and what they are happy with. remember you sleep for 8 hours or more and work the same , so unless you are sitting in front of the computer watching the download rate and trying to tweak it then whats the point.
get your settings your comfortable with, get a torrent you really are looking forward to and start it, then forget it. come back later and see whats there, if its not finished so what, your getting it for free anyway!

thanks so much, now i have speeds of 40kbps which is a great improvement from 8kbps. I am still adjusting to reach even better speeds![]()
thanks again

i was looking foe help for ages then came across your post and would like to say that after taking your advice my speeds went from 20kbs to 153kbs and would like to thank you for the excellent post.keep up the good work![]()
I tried everything you say here and in other posts, I dont know how the configuration was originally anymore, it was kind of better before I could download from 10 to 16 kb and now it doesnt go more than 5, the upload can go up to 20 but my download keeps the same, my speed is 1mb and i am directly connected. I checked that about too little seeds and stuff but even trying to download a popular movie didnt help... should i download another bit program?
